My name is Ayla Vlemmings. In 2018 I founded Design Studio Ayla. I’m a designer who pays attention to detail, sustainability and knowledge. Born and raised in France, I learned my interests in art and design at a young age. My parents moved to France from the Netherlands in the ’80s. Eventually, I moved back to the Netherlands to pursue my own dream here in Breda. That’s how I landed in our kikkerlandje.
I graduated at St. Joost School of Art & Design academy in 2016, in Breda. This is how my knowledge, technique and love evolved into ceramics and other materials like wood, leather and bio-plastics.
Apart from the La Lune Plates and Bowls, I also make other ceramic products such as name plates, birth plates and much more. I experiment a lot with clay, porcelain and pigments. Rolling up my sleeves and getting my hands dirty is the best part of my day. This is how I designed La Lune Collection; with detail and attention to colour.
I can often be found in nature and I also like to bring nature back into my interior. This is how the origin of Design Studio Ayla came alive. In my work I use a lot of earth tone colours. I use terms like Forest, Sunrise, and Blossom to reinforce my inspiration. I created a method for the pigments to form a unique pattern and create a kind of a marble effect. Therefore, every product is different and unique.
The La Lune Collection is the birth of my company and the origin of my process. It’s a reflection of what makes me happy. Feeling the clay, experimenting with bold colours and getting each time an unexpected result. Just as unexpected and bold as nature can be. Ayla means ‘halo of light around the moon’. I like to think that my purpose is to make people connect even more with each other and nature. With this first collection it feels like an introduction of bold, colourful Plates and Bowls to share a meal with friends and family.
As my father has a passion for farming organic vegetables and my mother on human connections, I grew up having appreciation for food and making memories with my family and friends around a good meal. We never missed an opportunity to sit together around breakfast, lunch, dinner and later on a nice aperitif to connect and share our days. Nowadays it is an important value to teach my children. One of the reasons why I designed my products in such a way is that the tableware stands out when served to bring joy and life to the table.
